Another Anniversary Already

We caught up with Iain recently. He said, I can't believe it was three years ago that we reviewed your preparations and bid you farewell.

Indeed, another important anniversary is upon us. A time to muse of the things that have come and gone. An opportunity perhaps to contemplate how long the conversion to metric will really take.

In the last year a number of significant kilometerstones have been reached. We racked up our second consecutive financial year in the red. The kilometerage on the cruiser rolled past 100,000. We visited our seventh state, a full house.

Some things are becoming more natural. The pre-emptive gear change at the start of a hill climb for a few more revs. A lengthy break from a mountain hike to provide IT support on the mobile phone. Some things you never get used to. People who think that whistling kettles in campgrounds are a good idea. Unzipping the tent in the middle of the night.

We have been on the road long enough to have a fairly good sense of the state of rural services. It is apparent that the federal government has failed most of the semi-remote communities we normally service. Given that, it comes as no surprise that they have completely failed the truly remote and most needy communities.

One of the best things about our adventure is the special people we meet. Of course we meet lots of people on the road as any traveler would. Working however, introduces us to some really nice people we would otherwise never meet.

It certainly is a low stress lifestyle. How long can this adventure continue? That's a question that comes up more frequently than before....
